A Science Foundation with a Purpose
The last century has witnessed an unprecedented progress of science, and concurrently an extremely rapid progress of technology like never before. It is not at all surprising therefore that today’s times are called the “Age of Science”. Our everyday lives are totally engulfed by the advances in the scientific and technological sectors and the pace of these developments is also accelerating with time non-linearly.
While the knowledge generated through the pursuit of science is always a pure celebration of human mind and intellect, its impact on society can either be positive or negative depending on how the knowledge is applied in practice. It is this aspect that requires the awareness about the developments in science to be spread amongst the different elements of society, especially the youngsters. In particular, the sectors of energy, environment and health are deeply impacted by science and an irresponsible planning of these sectors over the past several decades internationally, has raised serious concerns about the very sustainability of life on earth and the world we know and call our home. Vigyandeep Science Foundation is launched as a Section 8 not-for- profit company (NGO) with an express purpose of taking the developments of modern science to “Young India” as well as other elements of society, and thereby facilitate the process of building a sustainable Society through collective understanding and efforts. Vigyandeep evolved through our team’s initial efforts through a start-up named S & T Digital through which a number of online engagements were envisioned and implemented.
Vigyandeep Science Foundation proposes to engage with youngsters as well as teachers in various ways such as arranging topical talks, seminars, science fares, science demonstrations, discussion meetings, video interviews with experts, poster and oral presentations, essay and lecture competitions, developing science communication. Our goal will also be to tap exceptional talent through such multiple avenues of interaction, and to offer such talented youngsters all the necessary help and assistance to excel in their careers so as to create future Indian leaders in the field of science and technology. While it would rather easy to connect to youngsters in the urban sector, significantly more efforts will be needed to connect to and tap talent in the rural areas. We propose to connect with several experts in Indian Academia and Industries as well as Indian Diaspora who are keen to help young Indians grow in their careers and request their valuable help in these endeavors. Vigyandeep also proposes to eventually undertake Data Sciences and Analytics of the percolation of new education initiatives, curricula, parallel learning programs in science education and outreach into the Indian education system and its impact on social uplifting.
VIGYANDEEP SCIENCE FOUNDATION is established as a Non-Governmental Organization (NGO) to spread awareness about the progress of modern science amongst different elements of the society; especially the Indian youth in both the rural and urban areas. Modern science has been driving the technological developments across the world over the past many decades, and the pace of the consequent transformative changes is also picking pace by the day.Comprehending the canvas and scale of these developments and their potential impact on our lives and our future are essential for young India to be able to position themselves in this rapidly evolving scenario. While there is a lot of information out there on the internet and the youngsters have an access to it, it is hard for them to distinguish between authentic information and knowledge, and something that is simply wrong. Having exposed to such wrong information at a premature age and stage in learning, it is even harder for them to unlearn and get back on track. While we, as community of people, touted the spread of information on the internet as “information revolution”, it is already under the clouds of “information pollution”.
Thus, it is essential for experts to reach the Indian student and teacher communities directly, and engage in a fruitful discourse of interactions, communications and discussions. It is important to emphasize to them that information is not knowledge, reading is not understanding, and seeing is not observing. It is equally important to identify and support exceptional science talent that would be torch bearers of scientific progress for our country and internationally. While talent is equally spread everywhere, opportunities are not. The rural areas in India are deprived of facilities and access to information, and fall behind in progress. Much more is therefore required to be done to connect to the students and teachers in rural areas and do the necessary hand-holding to bring them into the mainstream of knowledge, information and understanding. These foregoing arguments and ideas form the basis for initiating VIGYANDEEP science foundation; the motto being connect, engage, reach out and help.
We, the people behind VIGYANDEEP, are Professors, Scientists, and Professionals, who love modern science and appreciate the transformative changes brought about by the scientific and technological developments in our lives. We are equally concerned about the challenges posed by these developments for the environment and sustainability. We intend to develop and provide a multidimensional platform for young India and other elements of society to understand the pulse of these changing times and position themselves for leading a successful career and life.
A few years back some of us had initiated a start-up activity named “S & T Digital” and organized various international conferences, highly successful workshops on Careers in Science and Technology, and special talks under S & T Cafe. This has now morphed into VIGYANDEEP for a broader reach and higher societal impact.
